Wilson, NC -- Final results of the 60th North Carolina Women's Amateur Championship hosted by Wilson Country Club in Wilson, NC on Thursday June 18, 2009. Par 36-36--72, 5896 yards.
Katherine Perry of Cary fired the only sub-par round of the day to win the 60th NC Women's State Amateur Championship by two strokes over Patty Moore of Charlotte. "I didn't feel like I played that well," Perry said. "But I tried to finish strong and not make any mistakes." No mistakes were made as Perry carded two birdies and seven pars on the back nine. Perry, a 17-year old rising high school senior will get a chance to show off her steady game against some of the best women in the world in July at the US Women's Open Championship.
In the State Tee Division Carole Jones of Hillsborough shot a 74 in the final round to win by three strokes over Kay Wheeler of Charlotte and Betty Zavrich of Fayetteville. This division plays a shorter course.
Medalist awards were given to Meghan Moore, Patty Moore, Kathleen Strandberg, and Katherine Perry. Patty Moore was the Senior Champion and Mary Hill was Senior Runner-up. The Super Senior champion was Carol Jones and the runner-up was Carolyn Jordan. Katherine Perry received the Junior trophy.
Due to heavy rains in the Wilson area on Tuesday the first round was cancelled. The championship, which is normally contested over 54 holes, was shortened to 36 holes. Players were placed into flights for the final round.
This championship was conducted by the North Carolina Women's Golf Association (NCWGA) which is a volunteer based organization.
